The discovery of gold in 1886 ended the rural tranquillity in which Klerksdorp had basked for some 50 years. With this new found wealth a gathering of some 4000 diggers drew lots for the privilege and rights to mine the area. Within a year the town had no less than 70 bars and 200 shops. In 2004 this all changed yet again when the Rio Casino opened its doors.
